Grant Benzinger led Wright State with 22 points, including three on a key shot late in the game which sparked a seven-point run that helped the Raiders to an 85-81 victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday night.
The senior guard made the 3-pointer which gave Wright State (8-5) the lead for good at 78-77 with 2:14 left. That stopped a 7-0 run for Georgia Tech (5-6) and turned everything around for the Raiders, who then scored seven straight.
Cole Gentry added his own three before Justin Mitchell's free throw gave Wright State an 82-77 lead with 47 seconds remaining.
The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 83-81 and missed on a chance to tie in the final 10 seconds.
Loudon Love (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Mitchell (15 points, 10 rebounds) both finished with double-doubles, and each made one big free throw in the final 13 seconds.
Jose Alvarado led Georgia Tech with 23 points and Josh Okogie added 21.
Wright State scored 54 in the second half and needed a strong final 20 minutes after it struggled on offense in the first half.
Georgia Tech scored the game's first six points and led for most of the first half before taking a 40-31 lead at the break. The Yellow Jackets shot 57 percent from the field in the first half.
This finished a tough stretch for them where they played three games in six days -- and lost twice.
This was the first time the Yellow Jackets and Wright State have played.
