Marquette roared out to a 48-27 halftime lead Friday night in its season opener and maintained the advantage throughout the second half in an 80-59 victory over Mount St. Mary's at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
Guard Andrew Rowsey led Marquette with a game-high 23 points and also had five assists. Haanif Cheatham and Matt Heldt each added 13 points, combining to sink 11 of 14 shots from the field.
Senior guard Junior Robinson led Mount St. Mary's with 20 points, the 13th 20-point game of his career, and a game-high six assists. Freshman Donald Carey added 11 points for Mount St. Mary's, which simply couldn't stack defensive stops or take care of the ball in the first half.
Marquette converted 16 of 27 shots from the field in the first half and committed just four turnovers, establishing its presence immediately by scoring the game's first eight points.
Mount St. Mary's responded to consecutive 3-pointers by Carey and freshman Jonah Antonio with a 22-7 run that ended the first half and the game's competitive phase.
The Mountaineers sank just 9 of 22 shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes and also had 12 turnovers.
It got no better to start the second half for Mount St. Mary's as Marquette rattled off a 12-2 spurt to extend the advantage to 60-29 with 16:05 left on a jumper by Sacar Anim.
The margin reached 37 before the Mountaineers used a 22-6 run to make the final score more respectable.
