Senior forward Vincent Edwards recorded 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help second-seeded Purdue cruise to a 74-48 victory over No. 15 seed Cal State Fullerton on Friday in an NCAA Tournament East Region first-round game in Detroit.
Sophomore guard Carsen Edwards added 15 points, as well, for the Boilermakers (29-6), who have won six of their last seven games. Senior guard P.J. Thompson tallied 11 points as Purdue posted its 14th victory by 20 or more points this season.
Junior guard Kyle Allman Jr. scored 21 points for the Titans (20-12). Sophomore forward Jackson Rowe added 10 points for Cal State Fullerton, which shot just 36 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers in its first NCAA tourney game since 2008.
The Boilermakers face Butler in Sunday's second round. Purdue posted a 82-67 victory over the Bulldogs on Dec. 16 in Indianapolis.
Purdue suffered a big loss when it announced that senior center Isaac Haas suffered a fractured right elbow and will miss the rest of the season. Haas was injured with 8:49 remaining and briefly returned to the contest before again exiting.
Haas collected 10 rebounds to help the Boilermakers post a 44-34 rebounding edge.
Purdue shot 39 percent from the field.
"I think we did a great job of finding open people," Haas said in a postgame interview on truTV. "We exploited whatever they gave us on offense and we just made open shots."
The Boilermakers were sluggish for much of the first half before finishing with an 8-1 run to take a nine-point lead into the locker room. The momentum carried into the second half as Purdue served up an opening 11-2 salvo to take a 41-23 advantage with 16:47 remaining.
Senior guard Dakota Mathias drained a 3-pointer with 12:54 remaining to push Purdue's margin to 52-27. Mathias and Thompson buried back-to-back 3-pointers seven-plus minutes later to give the Boilermakers a 69-40 lead with 5:17 to play.
The lead topped out at 31 points.
Carsen Edwards scored 13 first-half points as Purdue led 30-21 at the break.
The Boilermakers shot just 33.3 percent in the half and the Titans were slightly worse at 32 percent.
Fullerton led 12-11 after a basket by junior guard Khalil Ahmad with 10:14 left in the half but then went 4 1/2 minutes without a point. Purdue took advantage with nine straight points and Carsen Edwards had six points during the burst to help the Boilermakers take a 20-12 advantage.
The Titans responded with an 8-2 burst to pull within 22-20 on Allman's layup with 3:09 remaining. But Purdue answered with eight straight points and Carsen Edwards capped the spurt with a 3-pointer to make it a 10-point margin with 24 seconds left.
