Baylor went on a commanding run to close the game and the Bears erased a seven-point second-half deficit to defeat the West Virginia 82-75 in a Big 12 Conference game on Saturday at Waco, Texas.
Mario Kegler's 3-point jumper with 2:23 left put Baylor on top for good at 71-70. Devonte Bandoo followed with a free throw for the Bears following a technical foul on West Virginia for having six men on the court.
Jared Butler's layup and free throw, and two more free throws sealed the Bears' second win in their past five games. Baylor closed the game on a 16-5 run.
Kegler led Baylor (18-9, 9-5 Big 12) with a career-high 23 points and 10 boards. He got plenty of help from Bandoo and Mark Vital.
Bandoo scored 22 points and Vital was a force in the paint, scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
West Virginia (10-17, 2-12) started its 17th different lineup this season. Starting point guard Brandon Knapper out because of a neck injury and King McClure missed his fifth straight game.
The Mountaineers had four players score in double figures. Lamont West led the way with 16 points. Jordan McCabe added 14 and Jermaine Haley and Andrew Gordon each recorded 13 points.
Baylor came out flat and trailed 9-2. Bandoo connected on back-to-back corner 3-point jumpers to wake up a lethargic Bears' offense.
But foul troubles stopped any momentum Baylor was building. Freddie Gillespie picked up two fouls in the first three minutes and Flo Thamba committed three fouls in the first six minutes.
In all, 25 fouls were called in the first half with the Mountaineers making 11 of 16 free throws and the Bears making 12 of 17.
West Virginia led by seven on a McCabe 3-point jumper with 12:20 left when the Bears started their comeback. Three straight free throws and a Bandoo 3 cut the deficit to 56-55 at the 10:40 mark.
Matthew Mayer's 3-pointer gave the Bears a 58-57 lead, their first since the 14:13 mark of the first half.
The lead changed hands seven times until West Virginia opened up a four-point lead at 70-66 with 3:07 left.
Bandoo's jumper ignited a 10-point Baylor run that gave the Bears the lead for good.
