Last Meeting ( Dec 6, 2018 ) Iowa State 84, Iowa 98

Iowa State looks to build on its best win of the season when it hosts Iowa in the 73rd edition of the Cy-Hawk series on Thursday. The Cyclones avenged an 84-76 loss to No. 22 Seton Hall in the Battle 4 Atlantis on Nov. 29 with a 77-66 victory over the Pirates on Sunday to record their first win over a Top 25 team this season, and hope to ride the momentum to their 13th consecutive non-conference home victory.

"Every good team has to have a signature win and this is the first one for us," Iowa State star Tyrese Haliburton told reporters. "It felt really good to beat a ranked team but also to beat a team that beat us before." Iowa bounced back from a loss to No. 7 Michigan on Friday with a 72-52 victory over Minnesota on Monday to pick up its first Big Ten win. The Hawkeyes had surrendered more than 100 points against the Wolverines (103-91) in their conference opener, but held the Golden Gophers to their lowest scoring output since 2007 in the rivalry, and hope for another stellar defensive showing as they search for their first win in Ames in 16 years. "We guarded ball screens a lot better and I thought we closed out better," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery told reporters. "We picked up guys in transition and we stayed down in our stance."
