Marquette @ Seton Hall preview

Prudential Center

Last Meeting ( Mar 15, 2019 ) Seton Hall 81, Marquette 79

Markus Howard and Myles Powell will renew their rivalry when Marquette visits No. 25 Seton Hall on Saturday for a Big East game. The duo have met eight times previously with the Golden Eagles and the Pirates each winning four games and Howard enjoying a slight scoring advantage.

Howard and Powell have combined for 4,271 points, the eighth-most in Big East history between two players who careers ran concurrently. Howard enjoys a sizable edge with 2,330 points overall and 1,156 points in Big East games, while Powell is still fewer than 60 points shy of reaching 2,000 and 1,000 points, respectively. Powell got the better of his rival last season as the Pirates won two of three games, including a Big East Tournament semifinal, and he put up an average of 25.6 points - eight points per game more than Howard, who holds the two highest-scoring games in Big East history. Powell, who won Big East Player of the Year award last season over Howard, is coming off a game in which he had 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists as Seton Hall won its fifth straight game and improved to 3-0 in the Big East, while Howard, who broke the record for the most made field goals (727) in Marquette history, produced his 23rd career 30-point game with 39 against Providence as the Golden Eagles fell 81-80 in overtime.

TIME: 4 p.m. ET. TV: CBS Sports Network

ABOUT MARQUETTE (11-4, 1-2 Big East): With very little consistent scoring help, Howard continues trying to do it all for the Golden Eagles, which included putting up a school-record 33 field goal attempts against Providence - three more than the previous mark. The senior already held the record for most field goals in a game (17), which he also set against Providence last season, and is 10 attempts away from passing Jerel McNeal (1,649) for most career field goal attempts. Brendan Bailey and Koby McKwen have alternated sharing the scoring load, combining for 66 total points in the last three games.

ABOUT SETON HALL (11-4, 3-0): Myles Cale will likely draw the task of guarding Howard, who has 56 career games with 20 or more points, including two last season against the Pirates. Cale did a solid job against Xavier's Naji Marshall, holding him scoreless in the first half as Seton Hall built a 40-32 advantage and permitting 15 points overall in a 83-71 victory for the Pirates. "No one cares about who's doing it or how it's getting done, whether on the offensive or defensive end," Powell told the media. "Everybody just wants to win. I feel like that's why we are on a five-game winning steak and at the top of the Big East."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The most points by two Big East players whose careers ran concurrently is 4,698 points from 2007-2010 by Notre Dame's Luke Harangody (2,476) and Villanova's Scottie Reynolds (2,222).

2. Seton Hall is 75-7 under coach Kevin Willard when scoring 80 points or more.

3. Howard scored 53 points against Creighton last season to break the mark (52 points) for the most points in a Big East game that he shared with Providence's MarShon Brooks, who set the mark in 2010.

PREDICTION: Seton Hall 80, Marquette 75
