Iowa State @ Baylor preview

Ferrell Center

Last Meeting ( Mar 14, 2019 ) Iowa State 83, Baylor 66

After an historic win over No. 7 Kansas, second-ranked Baylor looks to build on a great start to its season when it hosts Iowa State on Wednesday. The Bears snapped a 16-game losing streak at Allen Fieldhouse in the 67-55 victory on Saturday and defeated a top five team on the road for the first time in program history.

"I knew at some point Baylor was going to win up here, and I was just hoping that I would get to be a part of it," Baylor coach Scott Drew told reports. "I'm really pleased with this group because they've worked extremely hard and played with a lot of toughness and poise today. ... Any time you beat a coach (Bill) Self team, you have to beat them, because they don't beat themselves." Baylor has won 12 straight games - the third longest active streak in the nation behind San Diego State (17) and Auburn (15) and are five away from the Bears' all-time mark of 17 set in 2011-12. Baylor is also the only team with five wins against AP Top 25 teams, going 5-0. Iowa State notched its first conference win Saturday by knocking off Oklahoma 81-68 in Ames after losses to TCU (81-79 in overtime) and Kansas (79-53) in its first two league contests.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (8-7, 1-2 Big 12): Penn State transfer Rasir Bolton (15.1 points) tied a season high with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting and added six assists and Tyrese Haliburton (16.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 7.7 assists) added 15 points and eight assists against the Sooners. The Cyclones shot 37.5 percent from the arc to raise their season mark to 32.2 - 217th in the nation entering Tuesday. Haliburton is the only player in the country averaging 16 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

ABOUT BAYLOR (13-1, 3-0): Jared Butler (team-high 16.7 points, 40.4 3-point percentage) scored 22 points, MaCio Teague (14.6 points, 36-percent 3-pointers) added 16 points and the defense limited the Jayhawks to 39 percent shooting, including 4-of-15 from the arc. Forwards Freddie Gillespie (9.0 points, 9.1 rebounds) and Mark Vital (6.5 points, 6.0 rebounds) do the dirty work, as Gillespie ranked 14th in the nation nationally in offensive rebound percentage (16.4) and Vital ranks 14th in steal percentage (4.7), and is second on the squad in offensive rebound percentage (11.7). Baylor ranks sixth nationally in scoring defense (58.1) and eighth in scoring margin (15.6), and the Bears have led or been tied for 94 percent of game time over their last eight games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Iowa State leads the series 20-18, but Baylor is 14-2 versus Iowa State in Waco with six straight wins. The Bears won two regular-season meetings last year but the Cyclones got revenge in the Big 12 Tournament.

2. Iowa State ranked 14th in the nation in turnover percentage (15.8) but one of its keys is it led the nation in fewest live-ball turnovers (6.5) which limits transition.

3. Baylor has held its last five high-major opponents to season-low scoring total in Arizona (58), No. 5 Butler (52), Texas (44), No. 23 Texas Tech (52) and Kansas (55).
