Georgia @ Chaminade preview

Lahaina Civic Center

Georgia will be looking to salvage a victory out of the Maui Invitational when it faces Chaminade on Wednesday in a matchup for seventh place. The Bulldogs fell to Dayton and No. 3 Michigan State in the first two days of the tournament, but a win over the Division II Silverswords would send them home to Athens and into a weeklong break with some momentum.

The Bulldogs saw their 4-0 start coming to a crashing halt as the main drivers of that early success - Anthony Edwards and Rayshaun Hammonds - may have struggled to get acclimated to Lahaina Civic Center. The duo, who between them had four 20-point games before heading to Hawaii, had 11 points combined in a 80-61 loss to Dayton in the opening round before rebounding in a 93-85 defeat to Michigan State. Edwards, a freshman guard from Atlanta, posted career highs with 37 points - 33 in the second half, 11 made field goals, seven 3-pointers and three blocks while the junior Hammonds scored 13, but the Bulldogs couldn't finish off a rally that saw them outscore the Spartans 54-41 after trailing by 21 points at halftime. Tyler Cartaino couldn't maintain his hot start, which included a pair of 20-point games and 17 points in a loss to No. 5 Kansas, as he managed nine in the Silverswords' 74-48 loss to UCLA.

ABOUT CHAMINADE (2-2): Cartaino didn't do much for the Silverswords as a sophomore, averaging 3.1 points, but after redshirting in 2017-18, he came back a different player. The 6-6 guard/forward put up 17.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game last season to earn All-Pacific West Conference first team honors and seems poised to enjoy even more success once the Silverswords return to Division II competition. The PacWest Male Scholar Athlete of the Year last year entered the UCLA game shooting 62.5 percent but stands at 51.7 percent, well below his conference leading 59 percent from last season, after a 4-of-16 clunker.

ABOUT GEORGIA (4-2): Like his teammates, Sahvir Wheeler also got off to a fast start with 29 points in the first two games, but then suffered through three games in single digits before scoring 10 points against Michigan State. The freshman guard has done a good job of ball control, dishing out 30 assists against 12 turnovers. Wheeler, who was the country's No. 8 point guard coming out of high school, hit his first career 3-pointer in the loss and he, Edwards and Hammonds combined for 20 of Georgia's 27 made field goals and 10-of-12 made triples.

TIP-INS

1. The freshman class scoring record at Georgia is 646 points by Jacky Dorsey in 1975, a mark that is within reach of Edwards at his current clip of 20 points per game.

2. Dorsey was the last Georgia freshman to score more than 37 points in a game when he had 41 against LSU in 1975.

3. The 37 points by Edwards, which were six points shy of the Maui Invitational record set by Gonzaga's Adam Morrison in 2005, matched the 11th-highest single-game total in school history while the seven 3-pointers are tied for the sixth-most.

PREDICTION: Georgia 90, Chaminade 65
