Notre Dame @ Louisiana State preview

The island breeze apparently agrees with Notre Dame seniors Matt Farrell and Bonzie Colson, who opened the Maui Invitational with dominating performances. The high-scoring duo look to continue their hot shooting Tuesday as the No. 12 Fighting Irish face LSU in the semifinals at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Farrell scored a career-high 27 points while Colson added 23 in Monday’s 83-56 victory over Division II Chaminade as the Fighting Irish shot 53.8 percent from the field, including 9-for-20 from 3-point range. Notre Dame’s deep roster includes promising freshman swingman D.J. Harvey and sophomore guard T.J. Gibbs, but the Fighting Irish relied on their seniors against Chaminade. “Matty and Bonzie set the tone for us,” coach Mike Brey told reporters. “They’re our veteran guys. While some other guys were a little excited in this atmosphere and it was kind of new to them, I thought those two guys really settled.” Notre Dame faces its toughest test of the young season against LSU, which closed the first day of tournament play by using a late rally to post a 77-75 victory over Michigan.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (4-0): Colson, a consensus preseason All-American, is averaging 20.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and three blocked shots while shooting 64 percent to lead the Fighting Irish, who have opened with four straight wins for the fourth consecutive season. Harvey, who scored a career-high 16 points in Thursday’s 105-66 victory over Chicago State, followed up with 12 points in 19 minutes off the bench against Chaminade. Junior guard Rex Pflueger has started all four games but finds himself in an early shooting slump, missing 18 of his first 25 shots.

ABOUT LSU (3-0): The Tigers have an emerging star in point guard Tremont Waters, who finished with 21 points and four assists in the win over Michigan and was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring 27 points in the season opener against Akron. LSU, picked to finish 14th in the SEC preseason poll, shot 58.7 percent from the field against the Wolverines and boasts a high-flying offense under first-year coach Will Wade, who was eager to savor Monday’s victory. “That was a huge win for us,” Wade told reporters. “I’m so proud of our players. They’ve earned this, and you could tell by the way we reacted how big a win it was for us.”
