Iowa State @ Oklahoma State preview

Gallagher-Iba Arena

Last Meeting ( Mar 9, 2017 ) Oklahoma State 83, Iowa State 92

Coming off a wire-to-wire thrashing at the hands of its arch-rival, Oklahoma State, if it wants to break into the win column in Big 12 play, will have to break a long losing skid to Iowa State when it hosts the Cyclones on Saturday. The Cowboys were blown out 109-89 by Oklahoma on Thursday, as fabulous freshman Trae Young posted 27 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

“We got our tails kicked, and obviously got our tails kicked by a really good team,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton told reporters afterward. The Cyclones have won 10 straight games against the Cowboys, including four straight in Gallagher-Iba Arena, which is tied for the longest active winning streak in Stillwater. However, Oklahoma State will be no pushover this time, as all four of their losses this season have come against teams ranked 11th or better in the AP poll. Like the Cowboys, the Cyclones are seeking their first conference triumph after Monday’s 74-70 overtime loss to Texas despite 24 points and six 3-pointers by Donovan Jackson.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT IOWA STATE (9-4, 0-2 Big 12): Freshman Cameron Lard (11.3 points, 7.0 rebounds), who had career highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds against the Longhorns, is second among Big 12 players shooting 65.9 percent from the field, and his 16.2 offensive rebound percentage is tops among Power-5 freshmen (min. 10 games played). Freshman guard Lindell Wigginton, who averaged 16.2 points entering the Texas game, scored just four points on 2-of-14 shooting. Jackson leads the team in scoring (15.7 points) and 3-pointers (41), while junior guard Nick Weiler-Babb is the only player nationally averaging at least 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (10-4, 0-2): Sharpshooter Thomas Dziagwa (8.0 points, 41.9 3-point percentage) hit five 3-pointers and had a team-high 19 points against the Sooners, while Tavarius Shine finished with 16 and Jeffrey Carroll added 15. Shine (11.6 points per game), who fouled out against Oklahoma with 13 minutes left, only gets better as the competition level improves, averaging a team-best 14.6 points on 53.1 percent shooting against the five ranked teams the Cowboys have played. Carroll (15.2 points, 6.5 boards) leads the team in scoring (15.2 points) and is one of three Big 12 players averaging 15 points and 6.5 rebounds, while junior forward Mitchell Solomon (8.8, 6.5) is shooting 61.3 percent from the floor and is averaging 10.6 points over his last nine games.

TIP-INS

1. The all-time series is tied at 63-63, with Oklahoma State leading 37-17 in games played in Stillwater.

2. Solomon has six double-digit scoring performances this season, which are already the most by a Cowboy listed at 6-9 or taller since Marcus Dove had 14 double-digit games in 2007-08.

3. Lard is one of three freshmen nationally averaging 10 points and shooting 65 percent from the field (Romello White, Arizona State; Daniel Gafford, Arkansas).

PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 82, Iowa State 74
