No. 21 Purdue showed in its season opener that there was no reason to be concerned about losing All-American forward Caleb Swanigan to the NBA. The Boilermakers aim to improve to 42-2 in November home games under 13th-year coach Matt Painter when Chicago State visits Sunday as part as the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

Swanigan averaged 18.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in his sophomore season before being selected in the first round by the Portland Trail Blazers. However, Painter returned his next six top scorers, including wing Dakota Mathias, who scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half as Purdue raced to a 20-point halftime edge and coasted to a 105-74 victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Friday. The Boilermakers shot 59 percent from the field and drained 9-of-19 shots beyond the arc while also holding the Cougars to 38 percent from the field. Chicago State opened its season Friday with a 95-62 loss to another Big Ten team, Iowa.

ABOUT CHICAGO STATE (0-1): The Cougars finished 6-26 a season ago and have won just one conference game in the Western Athletic Conference over the last two seasons. Fred Sims, Jr., who averaged 18.8 points and 4.6 rebounds last season and considered jumping to the NBA before deciding to return for his junior season, scored 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting against the Hawkeyes but had just two rebounds and no assists. Junior point guard Rob Shaw, who has already played collegiately at Southwest Baptist and Kentucky State, added 10 points, six assists and four steals in 30 minutes.

ABOUT PURDUE (1-0): Senior 6-8 forward Vincent Edwards - a preseason All-Big Ten pick who averaged 12.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists last season, added 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and three blocks in 24 minutes. Purdue also got 16 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes from 7-2 center Isaac Haas and 16 points from sophomore guard Carsen Edwards. One area of concern without Swanigan around to control the glass is rebounding; Purdue yielded 24 offensive rebounds in the opener - the fifth most ever in a game by an opponent - and was out rebounded 40-39 despite a pair of 7-footers.

TIP-INS
