Eighth-ranked Wichita State hosts Charleston on Monday after its season opener produced a blowout victory and an indication that sophomore guard Landry Shamet is healthy again. The Shockers routed Missouri-Kansas City 109-57 on Friday as Shamet, who showed no evidence of offseason foot surgery, recorded 17 points -- one of six double-figure scorers for Wichita State.

When asked what impressed him the most about Shamet on Friday, Shockers coach Gregg Marshall told reporters: "Not his (three) turnovers. The way he shot the ball, he looked very healthy, looked in great shape. He's got to be a little more careful with the basketball. I thought, all-in-all, the first nine, 10 guys played really well." Front and center was senior forward Darral Willis Jr., who recorded team highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds after averaging 9.8 and 5.1 last season. The Cougars, who opened with a 68-60 overtime victory versus Siena on Friday despite shooting 32.9 percent from the field, return all five starters from last season's 25-win team. "It will be good to catch up with some folks that I really like and admire,'' Marshall told reporters. "(Charleston) Coach (Earl) Grant was with me for six years (as an assistant). ... They are a very good team. I think it is his best team. ... They've got some really, really good players. They are a dangerous team, and we are going to have to play very well."

ABOUT CHARLESTON (1-0): Senior guard Joe Chealey, a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection after averaging 17.8 points (fourth in the CAA) and 3.2 assists (eighth), contributed 17 points and seven rebounds Friday while shooting 6-for-21 from the field. Sophomore guard Grant Riller, who averaged 13.1 points last season while being named to the All-CAA rookie team, scored 21 points (7-for-17 from the floor) versus Siena. Junior forward Jarrell Brantley, an All-CAA second-team selection who averaged 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds (third in the CAA) last season, did not play Friday after injuring his knee in practice last week.

ABOUT WICHITA STATE (1-0): The Shockers, who begin the season with their highest ranking in the coaches poll since they were No. 7 in 1981-82, run deep with 10 players recording at least 10 minutes Friday. Shaquille Morris' senior season is off to a good start as the center registered 16 points, five rebounds, four blocks, two assists and two steals against Kansas City. Senior guard Conner Frankamp also had a strong game Friday with 11 points and a career-high nine assists.
