Georgetown @ DePaul preview

Wintrust Arena

Last Meeting ( Feb 27, 2019 ) DePaul 73, Georgetown 82

The postseason aspirations for Georgetown are, for the moment, off life support as it prepares to visit DePaul on Wednesday in a Big East game. Jessie Govan played perhaps his best game Saturday on Senior Night, willing the Hoyas to a win over Seton Hall, one that gives them a chance to get above .500 in the conference with a victory over the Blue Demons.

Govan's final home game got off to a rough start as he missed his first eight shots, but aside from finishing with six turnovers, he was a stud for the Hoyas. The 6-10 center from Queens, N.Y., scored 21 points, including 15 in overtime and all 11 of Georgetown's points in the second overtime, and grabbed 12 rebounds to tie Dikembe Mutombo for seventh in school history with 823 boards. "To me, that was Jessie's best game of his career," coach Patrick Ewing told the media of Govan, who has 1,615 career points. "His shots weren't falling. There have been games in the past where he let that affect him and he stopped playing, and tonight he didn't. He kept preserving." Max Strus electrified Senior Sunday by scoring a career-high 43 points - the most points in a game for DePaul in more than 30 years - as the Blue Demons swept the regular season series from tournament-bound St. John's with a 92-83 victory.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (18-11, 8-8 Big East): Govan had help against Seton Hall from a pair of freshmen in Josh LeBlanc and James Akinjo. LeBlanc had 14 points to break a string of five straight games in single digits, pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and came up with three steals to earn Big East Freshman of the Week honors for the second time while Akinjo had 16 points - his most in nearly a month - four assists and four steals for the Hoyas. "Tonight, was the proudest I have ever been of my team," Ewing told reporters. "You want your team to take on your personality, well, they took my personality. We fought for everything."

ABOUT DEPAUL (14-13, 6-10): The 43 points put Strus up there with some of the greats in DePaul history. Only five other players have scored at least 43 points in a game for the Blue Demons, a list that includes record holder George Mikan (53 points), Stanley Brundy (47) - the last man to do so in December 1988 - and Mark Aguirre, who accomplished the feat twice with 47 and 45 points, respectively. Strus, whose previous high was 34 points earlier this season, scored 36 in the second half to go over 1,000 points in his two seasons with DePaul.

TIP-INS

1. Govan has averaged 15.6 points and six rebounds in seven career games against DePaul and has produced two 20-point games, including 26 in Georgetown's 82-73 victory Feb. 27.

2. The Hoyas have won 11 straight against the Blue Demons in Chicago and eight of 10 overall to improve to 31-9 in the series.

3. Femi Olujobi played in his 115th college game and produced his 46th game in double-figure scoring and 11th double-double in the win over St. John's.

PREDICTION: Georgetown 87, DePaul 80
