Randy Wright threw for a touchdown and Nick Aprile ran for one as UC Davis used a third-quarter surge to post a 14-13 victory over San Jose State on Saturday.
The Aggies (2-3) trailed 13-0 at the half but shut the Spartans down in the second half and ruined their homecoming.
San Jose State (1-4) had already lost at Alabama, Wisconsin and Utah but appeared ready to roll over UC Davis early on. Harrison Waid kicked a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter, added a 36-yarder in the second and Matt Faulkner threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Jalal Beauchman in the first quarter as the Spartans built a 13-0 lead at the half.
UC Davis went ahead with a big third quarter and defense, shutting San Jose State out over the final two quarters.
Aprile made it 13-7 with a 1-yard touchdown run with just over nine minutes left in the third quarter. Wright then threw what proved to be the game-winning touchdown just over seven minutes later when he hit Tom Hemmingsen for a four-yard score.
Wright completed 20-of-34 passes for 223 yards and was not sacked or intercepted.
Lamon Muldrow picked up 137 yards on 22 carries for the Spartans, who have lost two straight.
