Tyler Hansen threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more as Colorado held off Colorado State 28-14 in the Mile High Showdown on Saturday to give coach Jon Embree his first victory.

The Buffaloes (1-2), who entered the game with 125 rushing yards, had 145 on Saturday. Rodney Stewart led the way with 98 on 19 carries.

Hansen capped the second-longest scoring drive by time in Colorado history (10:03) with a 2-yard run to make it 28-14 with 1:15 left.

The Buffaloes overcame 114 yards in penalties and took advantage of a big miscue by the Rams late in the first half. Colorado regained possession after Colorado State blocked a punt at the Colorado 29, but inexplicably came into contact with the ball before Colorado recovered at its own 40 with less than 2 minutes left.

Colorado cashed in with 12 seconds left when Kyle Cefalo caught a 24-yard touchdown pass to give the Buffaloes a 14-7 lead.

Wide receiver Charles Lovett threw a 23-yard TD pass to Crockett Gillmore and quarterback Pete Thomas had a 4-yard touchdown run for Colorado State (2-1), which was held to 67 yards rushing.

Hansen, who set a school record with 474 yards on 28-of-49 passing in a 36-33 overtime loss to California last week, finished 17-of-32 for 215 yards on Saturday.

Hansen’s 2-yard run with 2:37 left in the second quarter was Colorado’s first touchdown in the first half of any game this season.

The Buffaloes, who entered the game the fourth-most penalized team in the country with 19, had 10 on Saturday.
