Tanner Price accounted for three touchdowns and Wake Forest cruised to a 48-5 rout of Gardner-Webb.
Wake (2-1) had been outscored by 19 points in the fourth quarter of its first two games, but there was no drama in the final stanza on Saturday night.
The Demon Deacons scored on four of their first five possessions of the first half and the first three drives of the second half. The win pushed them over .500 for the first time in more than a year.
Gardner-Webb (1-2) entered the contest ranked fourth in the FCS against the pass but couldn’t corral the athleticism of Price. The sophomore led a passing game that amassed more than 300 yards for the third straight game.
Price’s 1-yard plunge broke a 3-3 tie in the first quarter and Wake broke open the game by halftime with a 27-5 lead.
Wake held Gardner-Webb to just five first downs and takes some much needed momentum in the bye week before it re-enters a brutal ACC schedule in October that features two top-15 opponents.
