Linebacker Terrell Manning made 11 tackles, broke up three passes and had one of his team’s four sacks as North Carolina State earned its first shutout since 2005 with a 13-0 victory over visiting North Carolina on Saturday.
Junior James Washington rushed for 110 yards and Mike Glennon threw his 20th touchdown pass of the season as the Wolfpack (5-4, 2-3 ACC) extended their win streak over the Tar Heels to five games.
North Carolina (6-4, 2-4), averaging more than 414 yards per game, was limited to 165. N.C. State had three interceptions, including David Amerson’s ninth.
Tar Heels’ red-shirt freshman running back Giovani Bernard was held to 47 yards, but became the first 1,000-yard rusher for the North Carolina since Jonathan Linton in 1997.
N.C. State held a versatile North Carolina offense to 32 yards in the first half. Glennon, who threw an interception on the first drive of the game, connected with T.J. Graham for a 12-yard touchdown with 8:23 left in the first quarter and State led 10-0 at the half.
North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner, who threw for a career-high 338 yards last week, had two interceptions and left the game in the third quarter with concussion-like symptoms.
The last Wolfpack shutout was against South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl (14-0).
