FORT WORTH, Texas -- Trevone Boykin passed for four touchdowns, Aaron Green ran for two and No. 3 TCU blasted Stephen F. Austin 70-7 on Saturday afternoon at Amon Carter Stadium.
TCU (2-0) had its share of questions after slipping past Minnesota the previous week. Boykin struggled to find any rhythm in the opener and the defense suffered a series of personnel losses.
None of that mattered against an overmatched FCS foe from the Southland Conference. The Horned Frogs had more touchdowns in the first quarter against the Lumberjacks than they did in the entire first game and piled up 627 yards of offense.
Boykin didn't miss the open receivers he overthrew against the Golden Gophers, finishing 18 of 27 for 285 yards and one interception. The Heisman Trophy candidate completed passes to seven different receivers before hanging it up for good after one series in the third quarter.
TCU receiver Kolby Listenbee hauled in two passes of at least 51 yards, including a touchdown, and finished with six receptions for 142 yards.
The Lumberjacks (0-2) finished with only 167 yards of total offense. SFA had 15 yards on its first play from scrimmage before managing only 24 yards on its next 36 plays going into halftime.
Stephen F. Austin quarterback Zach Conque completed 11 of 18 passes but for only 9 yards. Conque was sacked four times and picked off once. Backup quarterback Hunter Taylor (2-of-10, 12 yards) came on for the second half.
The Lumberjacks (0-2) had a chance to strike first thanks to a 14-yard punt on the Frogs' first possession. SFA drove inside the TCU 10-yard line but elected to bypass a short field goal attempt (its starting kicker was out) and go for it on fourth down.
The Lumberjacks came up short and the Frogs didn't need long to take the upper hand. Two long Boykin throws helped TCU cover 93 yards in eight plays.
Green took it the final 2 yards for the game's first touchdown. The senior added another TD later in the first quarter on a 7-yard scamper.
Boykin's first scoring throw was a 60-yard bomb to Listenbee with about two minutes left in the first quarter and the rout was on.
TCU took a 35-0 advantage into halftime.
Boykin connected with receiver Emmanuel Porter from 3 yards and called it a day early in the third quarter. TCU also scored on safety Denzel Johnson's 50-yard interception return before backup quarterback Bram Kohlhausen led two touchdown marches.
The shutout was spoiled less than a minute in the fourth as SFA freshman running back Loren Easly broke a 75-yard touchdown run up the middle.
The Frogs look to make it 3-0 next week as neighboring rival SMU visits Amon Carter Stadium. TCU has won 13 of the last 15 meetings.
Stephen F. Austin opens Southland play at home next week against McNeese State.
