Arizona State tight end Kody Kohl caught a 10-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter as the Sun Devils finally shook free of lower-division Cal Poly in a 35-21 victory at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz.
Kohl's reception from quarterback Mike Bercovici came with 7:36 left for a 28-21 lead. The ASU defense then stiffened just enough against the Mustangs' triple-option attack, forcing a punt on fourth-and-6 from the Sun Devils' 44.
ASU receiver Tim White accounted for 82 yards on the ensuing drive, including 59 on a run and a 4-yard touchdown reception.
Bercovici passed for 283 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Running back Demario Richard carried 25 times for 121 yards and two scores for ASU (1-1).
Fullback Joe Protheroe led Cal Poly (1-1) on the ground with 28 carries for 130 yards. The Mustangs, who have led the FCS in rushing in each of the past two seasons, rushed for 284 yards on 72 attempts.
ASU led 21-7 with the ball late in the first half, but Kohl lost a fumble at the ASU 46 with 2:31 to go. Cal Poly gained momentum with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Chris Brown with nine seconds before halftime.
