Senior quarterback Marquise Williams passed for 203 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards as North Carolina delivered a 48-14 trouncing of visiting Illinois at Chapel Hill, N.C.
Junior receiver Ryan Switzer returned a punt for a touchdown for the sixth time in his career and also caught a touchdown pass for North Carolina (2-1). Senior receiver Quinshad Davis became the Tar Heels' all-time leader by recording his 22th career touchdown reception, sophomore running back Elijah Hood rushed for 129 yards and one touchdown, and sophomore wideout Austin Proehl also caught a scoring pass.
Senior running back Josh Ferguson accumulated 133 rushing yards and scored a touchdown for the Fighting Illini (2-1). Junior quarterback Wes Lunt was 15 of 32 passing for 140 yards and one interception.
Ferguson's 1-yard scoring run pulled the Illini within 13-7 with 9:52 left in the first half before the Tar Heels scored the next 35 points. Williams connected with Davis on a 9-yard scoring as North Carolina led 20-7 at halftime.
Switzer's 34-yard scoring reception with 1:50 left in the third quarter pushed the Tar Heels' lead to 20 and Williams hit Proehl on a 3-yard touchdown throw with 12:56 remaining in the game. Hood tacked on a 28-yard scamper to make it 41-7 with 8:52 to play before Switzer navigated his way down field for an 84-yard punt-return score en route to setting a school single-game mark with 168 punt return yards.
Junior kicker Nick Weiler matched his career-long with a 48-yard field goal and senior running back Romar Morris scored on a 7-yard run to give North Carolina a 10-0 advantage with 1:46 left in the first quarter. Weiler kicked a 32-yard field goal early in the second quarter to boost the lead to 13.
