Matt Brieda rushed for two touchdowns, including the clincher late in the fourth quarter, to lead Georgia Southern to a 51-31 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday night in a Sun Belt Conference game at Malone Stadium in Monroe, La.
Georgia Southern led 31-10 at halftime and appeared to be in command, but Louisiana-Monroe wasn't done. Cornerback Junior Williams returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, trimming Georgia Southern's lead to 31-24.
The Eagles answered with a 41-yard touchdown run by running back LA Ramsby, and Brieda tacked on a touchdown with a 6-yard run with six minutes to play to seal the win.
Georgia Southern (4-1, 2-0 Sun Belt) had three interceptions, with Matt Dobson, Darius Jones and Antonio Glover each picking off Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Garrett Smith.
The Eagles rushed for 451 yards. Brieda finished with 149 yards on 19 carries. Ramsby had 98 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns. Running back Wesley Fields also scored two rushing touchdowns.
Georgia Southern has won four straight since dropping its opener to West Virginia. The Eagles are off next week before returning home to host New Mexico State.
Wide receiver Jared Mapps, tight end Harley Scioneaux and wide receiver D'Marius Gillespie caught touchdown passes for Louisiana-Monroe (1-3, 0-1).
