Third-ranked Texas Christian's defense rose up after an awful first quarter and put an end to what was shaping up as a shootout in Ames, Iowa.
Blanking Iowa State in the last three quarters, the Horned Frogs improved to 7-0 with a 45-21 Big 12 Conference win on Saturday night at Jack Trice Stadium.
After yielding 21 first-quarter points and 308 first-half yards, TCU tightened up considerably in the second half, forcing two turnovers and keeping the Cyclones (2-4, 1-2) off the scoreboard. Making the feat more impressive was that it lost starting strong safety Denzel Johnson in the second quarter after he was ejected for targeting.
Meanwhile, Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin did just about anything he wanted. Boykin completed 27 of 32 passes for 436 yards and four touchdowns while running 13 times for 74 yards and another score.
Wide receiver Josh Doctson, who missed time in the first half with a hip injury, still finished with 10 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns. TCU, now 4-0 in the conference, also got 101 yards and a score on six catches from wide receiver Kolby Listenbee.
Senior quarterback Sam Richardson hit 22 of 36 passes for 251 yards for the Cyclones. Wide receiver Allen Lazard hauled in five receptions for 147 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown in the first quarter from backup quarterback Joel Lanning.
The teams combined for nearly 1,100 yards of offense and 54 first downs.
The first quarter was a defense-optional affair, the teams combining for a whopping 471 total yards and 35 points.
Boykin threw for 189 yards and two scores in the first quarter, and three Iowa State passers combined for 206 yards and a touchdown. The Cyclones also got short scoring runs from running backs Joshua Thomas and Mike Warren, helping them take a 21-14 advantage.
Boykin tacked on a third score on the first play of the second quarter, finding tight end Charlie Reid yards behind any defender for a 14-yard connection.
Things quieted down with the only scoring the remainder of the quarter being a 23-yard field goal by kicker Jaden Oberkrom with two seconds left that gave the Horned Frogs a 24-21 halftime edge.
