PASADENA, Calif. -- Led by the passing of freshman quarterback Josh Rosen and a determined defense, UCLA upset 20th-ranked California 40-24 Thursday in front of 57,046 at the Rose Bowl.
Cal (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) was unable to contain UCLA's offense, which ran, passed and scored seemingly at will against a beleaguered Bears defense.
Rosen set a school single-game record for completions by connecting on 34 of 47 passes for 399 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Thomas Duarte caught a career-best 10 passes for a career-high 141 yards and a touchdown, and wide receiver Devin Fuller added seven catches for 100 yards and two scores.
UCLA's injury-riddled defense rose up to stop one of the nation's most prolific offenses, sacking quarterback Jared Goff five times. Goff did throw three touchdown passes and was not intercepted.
The Bruins (5-2, 2-2) scored on all six of their first-half possessions to take a 26-3 lead into the break.
Cal grabbed a 3-0 lead on the game's opening drive. The Bears consumed 5:27 while driving 66 yards in 14 plays, converting three of four third-down plays en route to a 27-yard field goal by kicker Matt Anderson.
Sparked by the running of junior Paul Perkins, the Bruins replied with a 48-yard drive that lasted nine plays. Fairbairn kicked a 44-yard field goal with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter.
UCLA quickly took a 10-3 lead when Rosen capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Thomas Duarte.
The Bruins extended the advantage to 17-3 when Rosen and wide receiver Devin Fuller collaborated on a 19-yard scoring pass. The 90-yard, 10-play drive featured the running and receiving of true freshman running back Soso Jamabo.
UCLA boosted its lead to 20-3 with 6:11 left in the first half when Fairbairn salvaged a stalled drive with a 24-yard field goal. A failed fake punt by Cal on its ensuing possession resulted in UCLA getting the third field goal of the half from Fairbairn, who converted from 20 yards for a 23-3 lead.
A brilliant catch of a 1-yard touchdown pass from Goff to wide receiver Kenny Lawler trimmed the Bears' deficit to 23-10. Cal drove 75 yards in nine plays in only 1:58.
However, Fairbairn sent his teammates into delirious celebration when he closed out the first half with a school-record 60-yard field goal. It was Fairbairn's career-best fourth field goal of the game.
UCLA scored on its seventh consecutive possession to start the second half when Rosen again connected with Fuller on a 21-yard touchdown pass. It gave the Bruins a 33-10 lead.
Goff (32-for-53, 295 yards, no interceptions) threw for two second-half touchdowns to cut the final margin.
UCLA running back Paul Perkins, the leading rusher in the Pac-12 last season, left the game in the first half with an injury and did not return.
