Senior running back Tyler Ervin had a huge game to help San Jose State beat New Mexico 31-21 on Saturday night at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
Ervin rushed for 263 yards and one touchdown for San Jose State (4-4, 3-2 Mountain West Conference). Junior quarterback Kenny Potter completed 16 of 20 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
Junior running back Teriyon Gipson rushed for 99 yards on nine carries for New Mexico (4-4, 2-2). Lobos junior quarterback Austin Apodoca completed just 8 of 20 passes for 124 yards and one interception but rushed for 59 yards on 12 carries.
The Spartans led 21-14 at the end of a first half that featured big plays by both teams.
Ervin had a 71-yard touchdown run on the second play of San Jose State's opening drive. New Mexico tied the score when Gipson scored on a 79-yard run midway through the first quarter.
The Lobos went up 14-7 on a 4-yard run by freshman running back Diquon Woodhouse in the second quarter, but Potter threw touchdown passes of 35 and 25 yards to put the Spartans on top at the break.
San Jose State extended its lead when Potter scored on a 12-yard run late in the third quarter. The Spartans went up 31-14 early in the fourth quarter.
The Lobos cut the lead to 10 on a 4-yard touchdown run by senior running back Jhurell Pressley midway through the fourth quarter but couldn't get closer.
