Utah 30, Utah State 26: Travis Wilson threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns as the host Utes edged their in-state rivals to avenge a rare loss in last year's “Battle of the Brothers.”
Andy Phillips' 19-yard field goal with 6:38 to play put Utah ahead to stay and capped a comeback. Utah State scored 20 straight points to turn an 11-point first-quarter deficit into a 23-14 lead with 11:52 left in the third before Phillips made the first of three second-half field goals – a 45-yarder – to make it 23-17 with 2:24 left in the stanza.
Karl Williams rushed in from 2 yards out to give the Utes a 24-23 lead before Utah State kicker Nick Diaz – who missed an extra point earlier – hit from 24 yards with 10:39 to go to put the Aggies back ahead at 26-24. Phillips connected on the go-ahead kick and added a 38-yarder with 19 seconds left to seal the win.
Utah ran out to a 14-3 lead after the first quarter as Wilson threw a 3-yard touchdown to Dres Anderson and a 30-yard strike to tight end Jake Murphy.
Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton, who threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns, ran for a game-high 85 yards and a score.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Utah lost to Utah State for the first time in 13 years last season in overtime. … Utes RB James Poole led the team with 12 rushes for 47 yards. … Aggies WRs Travis Van Leeuwen (107) and Bruce Natson (83) combined for 190 of the team’s 322 receiving yards.
