Fresno State 52, Rutgers 51 (OT): Derek Carr threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns, including a 25-yard pass to Greg Watson on the first play in overtime, and the Bulldogs edged the visiting Scarlet Knights in a game that featured 1,080 yards of total offense.
Carr set career highs in pass attempts and completions, finishing 52-of-73 with one interception as Fresno State accumulated 537 yards. Rutgers pulled within one point on Gary Nova's 4-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Coleman and decided to attempt the two-point conversion, but failed when Nova's pass in the right flat was broken up near the end zone.
The overtime drama capped a wild fourth quarter, which saw the Bulldogs tie the game at 45-45 with 38 seconds left after Carr connected with Josh Harper for a 2-yard touchdown. Rutgers quickly drove to the Fresno State 26-yard-line, but Kyle Federico missed a 43-yard field goal as regulation time expired.
Leonte Carroo had 135 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions and Paul James rushed 22 times for a career-high 182 yards for Rutgers, which led 20-7 with 8:20 left in the second quarter after one of Federico’s three field goals. Nova completed 26 of 41 passes for 348 yards and five touchdowns.
After holding Rutgers to 18 yards rushing in the first half, Fresno State allowed several big rushing plays after intermission, including James’ 55-yard run that set up Nova’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Coleman with 40 seconds left in the third quarter to put Rutgers ahead 31-28. The Scarlet Knights finished with 543 total yards.
