Arizona State 63, Northern Arizona 6: Marion Grice scored three touchdowns and Cameron Marshall had two TDs as the host Sun Devils routed the Lumberjacks in the season opener for both teams.
Marshall rushed for two first-quarter touchdowns and Arizona State led 42-0 at halftime before resting their starters in the second half. The Sun Devils’ 63 points are the team's highest total in 86 games dating back to Sept. 1, 2005, when they beat Temple 63-16.
Northern Arizona was outgained 554-237 in total yards and lost its top two playmakers when quarterback Cary Grossart (knee) and leading rusher Zach Bauman (head) left the game in the first half with injuries.
The win marked a successful debut for Arizona State coach Todd Graham, who was hired after the Sun Devils ended last season with five straight losses.
Sun Devils quarterback Taylor Kelly was 15-for-19 passing for 247 yards and one touchdown while sharing time with redshirt freshman Michael Eubank, who rushed for a score just before halftime.
Five Arizona State players scored their first career touchdown, including D.J. Foster, Brandon Magee, Richard Smith, Eubank and Grice, who rushed for 107 yards on 14 carries.
Northern Arizona, which has lost nine straight games to Arizona State, scored its lone touchdown on Chase Cartwright’s 20-yard pass to Nick Cole early in the third quarter.
