Old Dominion 41, Hampton 28: Taylor Heinicke threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns and the host Monarchs, in their first game as a member of the FBS, fended off their upset-minded crosstown rival.
Cam Boyd ran for a pair of touchdowns and Gerard Johnson rushed for 137 yards and a score as the Monarchs (1-0) improved to 4-0 all-time against the Pirates. Zach Pascal hauled in two scoring passes and finished with eight catches for 99 yards for Old Dominion, which is in its first season in Conference USA.
Jaylian Williamson threw for a career-high 407 yards and three touchdowns on 32-of-45 passing for FCS Hampton (0-1), which committed a pair of red-zone turnovers after cutting the deficit to 13 points early in the fourth quarter. Rashad Riddick had 11 catches for 119 yards and Jorrian Washington added four catches for 99 yards and a TD.
The Monarchs ripped off 21 unanswered points in the second quarter, with Heinicke sandwiching a pair of scoring passes to Pascal around Johnson's 31-yard touchdown run for a 28-7 lead with 1:24 left in the half. Hampton responded with a big drive and scored as time expired on Williamson's 6-yard toss to Twarn Mixson on fourth-and-6.
Heinicke's 41-yard strike to Antonio Vaughn and Boyd's second TD, from 8 yards out, gave Old Dominion a 41-21 edge midway through the third, but Williamson hooked up with Washington on a 75-yard pass with 12:36 to play and Hampton recovered the ensuing onside kick. The Pirates were driving before Richie Staton sacked Williams and recovered a fumble at the 12, and a botched pitch inside 10-yard line with less than three minutes left sealed it.
