Georgia Tech 70, Elon 0: Vad Lee passed for two touchdowns and rushed for a score as the host Yellow Jackets rushed for four first-quarter touchdowns to rout the Phoenix in the season opener.
Georgia Tech (1-0) never was seriously threatened, scoring twice in the first five minutes. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 368 yards and forced three first-half turnovers. David Sims rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass, and Tyler Marcordes (95 yards) and Chris Milton (54 yards) returned interceptions for scores.
Elon (0-1) finished with four turnovers, falling to 0-7 against FBS opponents. Quarterback Mike Quinn threw three interceptions.
Deon Hill scored from 14 yards out with 12:58 left in the first quarter and Sims scored with 10:06 to go from 1 yard out, giving Georgia Tech a 14-0 lead. Zach Laskey added a 33-yard touchdown with six minutes left in the quarter, and Charles Perkins’ 3-yard scoring run with 3:38 remaining made it 28-0 Yellow Jackets.
Lee and Sims connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass on the opening play of the second quarter, and Marcordes’ interception return for a touchdown six minutes later gave the Yellow Jackets a 42-0 lead. Lee scored on a 2-yard run with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter, finishing with 189 yards passing and 49 yards rushing.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Georgia Tech finished with a school-record 173 yards on interception returns, besting the old record of 139 yards set against Tulane on Oct. 22, 1966. … The Yellow Jackets scored 70 points for the first time since posting 70 against Navy on Sept. 8, 2001. … Elon allowed 557 yards of total offense.
