Duke 52, Elon 13. Anthony Boone threw for 247 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Blue Devils past visiting Elon of the FCS.
Boone (22-of-33) led a Duke offense which piled up 567 yards, throwing two touchdowns apiece to senior Jamison Crowder (seven receptions, 93 yards) and senior Isaac Blakeney (four receptions, 45 yards). The Blue Devils (1-0) had 275 yards rushing behind the work of senior Josh Snead (12 carries, 74 yards), freshman Shaun Wilson (six carries, 71 yards) and backup quarterback Thomas Sirk (eight carries, 54 yards), who ran for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
It was the first game for Elon head coach Rich Skrosky, whose team didn’t commit a turnover but failed to generate enough offense, gaining 328 yards. Senior Mike Quinn completed 19-of-38 passes for 190 yards while B.J. Bennett rushed 13 times for 87 yards and scored the lone touchdown for the Phoenix (0-1).
After scoring on its opening possession, Duke led the rest of the way. Boone threw two touchdown passes in the second period, sandwiched around a touchdown run by Shaquille Powell (11 carries, 54 yards), as the Blue Devils grabbed a commanding 28-6 lead.
The second half started in similar fashion as the Blue Devils rolled 82 yards with the opening kickoff, Boone capping the march with a 13-yard strike to Crowder. Ross Martin’s 49-yard field goal expanded the lead to 38-6.
NOTEBOOK: Duke is now 7-0-1 in the series between the schools, which are located 40 miles apart. … Duke plays at Troy next week. … Elon will host North Carolina A&T.
