Texas Christian 48, Samford 14: Trevone Boykin threw for 320 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns as the Horned Frogs tamed the visiting Bulldogs in the season opener for both teams.
Kolby Listenbee led the way with 76 receiving yards and two touchdowns for Texas Christian (1-0), which has won 13 straight home openers. David Porter caught five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown while Trevorris Johnson added his first-career score for the Horned Frogs, who finished with 555 yards of total offense.
Michael Eubank finished 8-of-15 for just 63 yards and an interception in his debut for Samford (0-1), which has never beaten a current member of the Big 12 conference. Denzel Williams scored the lone offensive touchdown while Jamerson Blount returned an interception 55 yards for a score for the Bulldogs, who averaged just 1.9 yards per carry.
TCU jumped out to a 21-0 lead courtesy of a two-yard plunge from B.J. Catalon and touchdown grabs by Listenbee and Porter. The Horned Frogs extended their lead to 24 following Jaden Oberkrom's 22-yard field goal before Williams' two-yard run cut the deficit to 24-7.
TCU reclaimed its 24-point cushion after Boykin ran for a one-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. Johnson scored on a seven-yard run to cap off a 15-play, 99-yard drive and the Horned Frogs went on to win the first meeting between the schools.
GAME NOTEBOOK: TCU QB Matt Joeckel threw his first touchdown pass for the Horned Frogs following his transfer from Texas A&M. … TCU held Samford to just 143 yards and improved to 81-8 when holding opponents to 300 yards or less under Gary Patterson. … Samford head coach Pat Sullivan missed the game due to complications from a surgical procedure earlier in the year.
