Eastern Washington 49, No. 25 Oregon State 46: Vernon Adams passed for a career-best 411 yards and scored on a 2-yard run with 18 seconds left to lift the upstart Eagles to a stunning upset of the host Beavers.
Adams passed for four touchdowns and rushed for 107 yards and two scores as Eastern Washington, ranked third in the FCS Coaches Poll, defeated a Pac-12 program for the first time in 10 attempts. Oregon State had a chance to force overtime but Trevor Romaine’s 52-yard field-goal attempt was wide right as time expired.
Oregon State took a 46-43 lead on Terron Ward’s 4-yard run with 4:50 remaining before Adams guided Eastern Washington 75 yards on 11 plays for the winning points. The Eagles rolled up 625 total yards and survived a stellar performance from Beavers quarterback Sean Mannion, who was 37-for-43 passing for 422 yards and three touchdowns.
Oregon State trailed by 12 at halftime and took the lead with 15 consecutive third-quarter points on Mannion’s 7-yard pass to Brandin Cooks, a 3-yard run by Storm Woods and an ensuing two-point conversion. The Eagles regained the lead at 36-32 on Adams’ 19-yard scoring scramble with 1:29 left in the quarter, but the Beavers retook the lead on a 14-yard scoring pass from Mannion to Cooks before Adams hit Blair Bomber on a 47-yard touchdown with 10:30 left in the game.
Eastern Washington outgained the Beavers 376-217 in a first half that ended with the Eagles holding a 29-17 lead. Adams passed for 268 yards in the half and three second-quarter scores – a 24-yarder to Ashton Clark and aerials of 31 and 48 yards to Cooper Kupp.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Clark caught nine passes for 155 yards and Kupp had five receptions for 119 yards. … Cooks set career highs with 13 receptions and 196 yards. … Adams left the contest due to cramping after Eastern Washington’s first offensive play of the third quarter and returned later in the stanza after receiving intravenous fluids.
