East Carolina 52, Old Dominion 38: Shane Carden completed 46 of 54 passes for a program-record
447 yards and five touchdowns as the host Pirates staved off the Monarchs in their
season opener.
Justin Hardy was Carden’s main target, catching 16 passes
for 191 yards, while freshman Davon Grayson reeled in three touchdowns for East
Carolina. Carden broke David Garrard’s record of 414 yards set in 1998
against Memphis.
Taylor Heinicke led Old Dominion, completing 38 of 51 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 52 yards and a
score.
After Carden connected with Grayson at the end of the first
half to give East Carolina a 21-17 lead, Old Dominion got as close as four
points twice in the third quarter. A 10-yard rush from Colby Goodwyn pulled the
Monarchs within 35-31 before Carden threw
back-to-back touchdowns to Isaiah Jones and Grayson early in the fourth to give the Pirates a 49-31 lead.
Heinicke found Blair Roberts for a 9-yard TD to make it 49-38 with 6:11 remaining, but
Old Dominion got no closer than that. East Carolina’s Warren Harvey kicked
a 46-yard field goal to finish the scoring.
