Texas State 22, Southern Miss 15: Quarterback Tyler Arndt scored on a 17-yard run with 2:54 remaining as the visiting Bobcats rallied to spoil the head coaching debut of former Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
Southern Mississippi lost for the 13th straight time despite 377 passing yards by quarterback Allan Bridgford, a senior transfer from California. Senior Rickey Bradley caught seven passes for 193 yards for the Golden Eagles, who overcame a 11-point halftime deficit to take a 15-14 lead on a 36-yard field goal by Corey Acosta with 5:43 to go.
But Texas State answered with a seven-play, 75-yard game-winning touchdown drive capped by Arndt's run up the middle on a zone-read option. Arndt, who started the game but split snaps with redshirt freshman Jordan Moore, then connected with tight end Bradley Miller for a two-point conversion.
Southern Miss had two more possessions to try to force overtime, but Bobcat middle linebacker David Mayo ended one series with an interception and another with a fourth-down sack of Bridgford. Texas State improved to 10-0 over the past two-plus seasons when leading going into the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats held Southern Miss to just four first downs while building a 14-3 halftime lead, the fewest points allowed in a half by the Bobcats since Dennis Franchione took over as coach in 2011. The Golden Eagles finished with six turnovers and four lost fumbles, including one that Texas State cornerback Craig Mager returned 44 yards for the game's first touchdown.
