Iowa State 38, Tulsa 23: Steele Jantz threw for 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Iowa State took over in the second quarter and never looked back to top visiting Tulsa.
Shontrell Johnson rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and Josh Lenz caught eight passes for 96 yards for the Cyclones (1-0), who are trying to recover from a 6-7 campaign in 2011.
The Golden Hurricanes (0-1) scored 16 straight points in the first quarter to take a 16-7 lead but managed one more touchdown the rest of the way as Iowa State locked down on defense and Jantz controlled the ball.
The Cyclones scored 17 unanswered points in the second quarter and never trailed again, getting a rushing and a passing touchdown from Jantz, who completed 32-of-45 passes.
Jantz, who hooked up with Lenz on a 43-yard score in the first quarter, cut it to 16-14 when he rushed in from 5 yards early in the second quarter. Jantz gave Iowa State the lead for good on the next possession, capping a 70-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Ernst Brun Jr.
The Cyclones' defense recovered three turnovers and forced Tulsa to punt on six straight possessions between the second and third quarters.
The Golden Hurricanes broke their drought in the fourth quarter on Cody Green’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Keyarris Garrett, but Iowa State forced a three-and-out and intercepted Green on the next two possessions. Johnson cashed in the interception with a 5-yard touchdown run to put the game away.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Nebraska transfer Green completed 23-of-49 passes for 198 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Trey Watts rushed for 125 yards on 10 carries for Tulsa. … The Cyclones visit in-state rival Iowa next week while the Golden Hurricanes host Tulane. … Tulsa has reached a bowl game in nine of its last 11 seasons and will play only one more road game against a BCS school.
