Maryland 7, William & Mary 6: Justus Pickett ran 6 yards for the only touchdown of the game with 9:52 remaining and the Terrapins held on against the visiting Tribe.
The Terrapins took over after Drake Kuhn missed a 48-yard field goal attempt to start the fourth quarter and drove 69 yards to seize the lead. True freshman quarterback Perry Hills completed a key third-down pass to Kevin Dorsey for 22 yards to the William & Mary 14.
Maryland’s defense stopped William & Mary twice after grabbing the lead, including a fourth-down stand at the Tribe 40.
The Terrapins had two interceptions and a fumble in their first four possessions of the game and missed a short field goal in the second quarter. William & Mary cashed in for two Kuhn field goals, from 30 and 22 yards respectively, in the first quarter and led 6-0 at halftime.
Danny O’Brien transferred to Wisconsin and C.J. Brown suffered a season-ending knee injury in the preseason, leaving Hills as the starter. He was intercepted for the third time on Maryland’s first possession of the second half, but completed 16 of 24 for 145 yards overall.
Tre McBride had six receptions for 97 yards to lead William & Mary, which missed the FCS playoffs for the first time in three years in 2011.
GAME NOTEBOOK: William & Mary is 11-37 against the ACC. … Hills played at Central Catholic High in Pittsburgh, the school that produced Dan Marino. …Maryland, which has won three straight season openers, travels to Temple next Saturday.
