No. 13 LSU 37, No. 20 TCU 27: Jarvis Landry broke free for a pivotal 20-yard touchdown catch as the Tigers outlasted the Horned Frogs at the Cowboys Classic in Arlington, Texas.
LSU led 30-27 in the fourth quarter when Odell Beckham returned a kickoff 75 yards, setting up Landry’s decisive score. Landry reached back for Zach Mettenberger’s throw before spinning away from his defender and racing to the end zone. Terrence Magee added two third-quarter touchdowns as the Tigers won without 2012 leading rusher Jeremy Hill, who was out for disciplinary reasons.
B.J. Catalon returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and ran for a 26-yard score for the Horned Frogs. TCU got a spark from quarterback Trevone Boykin, who replaced Casey Pachall and played most of the second half. Trailing 23-10 in the third, TCU sent in Boykin and he promptly led a 10-play, 77-yard touchdown drive.
LSU's defense, which lost eight players to the NFL, still held TCU to 259 total yards.
The Tigers scored a touchdown on just one of four first-half trips to the red zone, settling for a 16-10 lead. But Mettenberger heated up after halftime and finished 16-of-32 for 251 yards. Landry caught eight balls for 109 yards, and Beckham made five grabs for 118 yards.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Horned Frogs played without reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Devonte Fields, who had 18.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a freshman last season. Fields was suspended for a violation of a "university and team policy.'' … Hill, who led LSU with 755 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns last year, was arrested in April in connection to a fight outside a bar. It is unclear how much time he’ll miss for disciplinary reasons. … Pachall fell to 15-3 as TCU’s starter.
