Houston 22, Temple 13: Richie Leone kicked five field goals and Ryan Jackson rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown as the Cougars came from behind to defeat the Owls in the inaugural American Athletic Conference game.
The Temple defense kept the Cougars out of the end zone until Jackson's 10-yard score with 1:06 remaining, but Leone's leg kept Houston (2-0) in the game. After a 35-yard miss by Leone on Houston's first drive, he nailed his next five field goal attempts, including career-long 40-yarder in the first quarter.
Freshman quarterback John O'Korn took over for David Piland in the second quarter, connecting on 23-of-31 passes for 233 yards as the Cougars collected 524 yards of total offense. Houston sophomore Deontay Greenberry notched his first career 100-yard receiving game with 165 yards on 14 catches.
Running back Kenneth Harper powered his way into the end zone twice in the first half for the Owls, and rushed 14 times for 51 yards. The Owls (0-2) were held scoreless in the second half.
Temple struggled in the kicking game as Jim Cooper missed a first-quarter point after attempt and Paul Layton could not convert on a 25-yard field goal that would have put the Owls back on top in the third quarter. Quarterback Connor Reilly completed 20-of-38 passes for 200 yards but he also threw two interceptions and a lost a fumble.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Houston LB Steven Taylor was automatically ejected in the first quarter for targeting a defenseless player in accordance with the new NCAA rule. ...
