No. 22 Missouri 49, Toledo 24: Maty Mauk passed for five touchdowns and rushed for a score as the visiting Tigers took control with 21 unanswered first-half points.
No. 22-ranked Missouri (2-0) snapped a 7-7 tie with three touchdowns in nine minutes, Mauk throwing scoring strikes to Darius White and Jimmie Hunt and adding a 1-yard touchdown run as the Tigers built a 28-7 advantage midway through the second quarter. Mauk finished 21-for-32 for 325 yards, Bud Sasser caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown, and Russell Hansbrough rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Kareem Hunt rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries for Toledo (1-1), but two first-half turnovers and a blocked field goal helped Missouri pull away. Phillip Ely completed 17-of-34 passes for 204 yards and an interception, but the transfer from Alabama was carted off the field after his knee buckled on a third-quarter pass attempt.
Kareem Hunt’s 38-yard touchdown run with 4:05 to go in the first quarter evened the score at 7, but Mauk moved the Tigers 75 yards in five plays and hit White on a 7-yard touchdown with 2:47 left in the period. Mauk was intercepted on Missouri’s next drive by Jordan Haden, but Sasser stripped Haden at the Tigers 9 and Jimmie Hunt recovered the fumble.
Missouri’s Aarion Penton intercepted Ely early in the second quarter and returning it 38 yards to the Toledo 25, setting up Mauk’s 1-yard scoring run to make it 21-7. Jimmie Hunt’s 13-yard touchdown reception from Mauk put the Tigers up 28-7 with 6:12 remaining before intermission, and Mauk hit Marcus Murphy on a 13-yard touchdown with just under nine minutes left in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 35-7.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Down 21-7, the Rockets marched to the Missouri 10, but Markus Golden sacked Ely for a 17-yard loss on third down and Harold Brantley blocked Jeremiah Detmer’s 44-yard field-goal attempt. … Kareem Hunt scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the third quarter, giving him five touchdowns in two games. … Jimmie Hunt finished with six receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
