North Texas 43, Southern Methodist 6: Trevor Moore kicked five field goals and the host Mean Green forced five turnovers in cruising past the Mustangs.
Reggie Pegram rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown in a little over a half of action and Antoinne Jimmerson added 47 yards and a touchdown for North Texas (1-1), which finished with a 27-0 edge in points off turnovers. Moore had field goals of 44, 21, 23, 42 and 47 yards.
Neal Burcham completed 12-of-22 passes for 99 yards but was intercepted twice before being yanked at halftime for SMU (0-2), which played three different quarterbacks in the contest. Der'rikk Thompson caught a game-high six passes for 74 yards for the Mustangs, who avoided being shut out for the second straight game when backup quarterback Kolney Cassel connected with Nate Halverson for a 33-yard touchdown on the game's final play.
North Texas held a 3-0 lead on Moore's 44-yard field goal on the Mean Green's first offensive series of the contest but broke the game open with a 20-point second quarter that featured 17 points off of three SMU turnovers. Pegram's 4-yard touchdown run made it 10-0 and came five plays defensive lineman Dutton Watson intercepted a Burcham pass, and after Moore connected on a 21-yard field goal, linebacker Jarrian Roberts scooped up a Burcham fumble and ran 31 yards to make it 20-0.
Moore then connected on three straight field goals to boost the North Texas lead to 29-0 before Jimmerson scored on a 8-yard run early in the fourth quarter five plays after Darvin Kidsy recovered a fumbled punt at the SMU 21. Fifth-string running back Erick Evans added a 53-yard touchdown run for the Mean Green with 2:59 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: SMU quarterbacks were sacked four more times bringing the total to 12 sacks allowed in two games. ... WR Darius Joseph, who caught 103 passes in 2013 for the Mustangs, suited up but was a late scratch because of a hamstring injury. ... SMU still leads the all-time series with North Texas, 28-5-1, but is now 0-3 in games played in Denton.
