Purdue 20, Indiana State 14: Akeem Hunt ran for a game-high
82 yards and returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown as the host Boilermakers gave coach Darrell Hazell his first victory with the
program.
Rob Henry completed 15-of-24 passes for 150 yards for
Purdue (1-1), which scored the first 17 points and held Indiana State
(0-2) to 39 rushing yards. B.J. Knauf added a touchdown run while Paul Griggs went 2-for-3 on field goals for the
Boilermakers.
Sycamores quarterback Mike Perish completed
29-of-45 passes for 256 yards and two scores, but threw an interception
with 46 seconds left in the game as Indiana State was unable to complete the
comeback.
Hunt took a handoff from Knauf on the opening
kickoff en route to his touchdown before Griggs hit an
18-yard field goal with 9:03 left in the second quarter to give Purdue a 10-0
halftime lead. Knauf scored on a 16-yard rush with 5:08 left in the
third quarter to make it 17-0.
Perish threw a
36-yard touchdown pass to running back George Cheeseborough with 2:44 left in
the third quarter and a 17-yard scoring strike to Demory Lawshe with
9:22 remaining in the fourth as Indiana State pulled within six. But the
Purdue defense held tough on two potential game-tying drives in the
fourth quarter, forcing the Sycamores to punt once before picking off
Perish to end the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Purdue held Indiana
State to 10 rushing yards on 14 carries in the first half and
0-for-7 on third-down conversions. ... The Boilermakers outgained the
Sycamores 134-39 on the ground, but were outgained 256-150 through the
air. ... Indiana State WR Tanner Riley finished with four catches for a
game-high 63 yards.
