No. 24 Clemson 73, South Carolina State 7: Cole Stoudt passed for 302 yards and Deshaun Watson added three touchdown passes as the host Tigers rebounded from last week’s loss to Georgia.
Clemson (1-1) rolled up 735 yards of total offense, scoring 24 points in the second quarter and adding 24 more in the third period. Stoudt finished 22-for-31 with a touchdown while Watson went 8-for-9 for 154 yards, and Artavis Scott caught six passes for 164 yards and two scores.
Dondre Lewis-Freeman rushed for 50 yards for South Carolina State, which finished with 44 yards of total offense and 7 yards rushing. Dominique Mitchell returned a fumble 35 yards for the Bulldogs’ only points.
Clemson led 10-0 after a quarter before Watson hit Charone Peake on a 7-yard touchdown on the opening play of the second quarter. Stoudt led Clemson 64 yards in seven plays on the Tigers’ next possession, hitting Scott on a 37-yard touchdown, and after Ammon Lakip’s second field goal of the half, C.J. Davidson scored on a 6-yard run with 3:46 left in the half to make it 34-0.
D.J. Howard scored on a 6-yard run early in the third quarter, Lakip booted a 24-yard field goal, Watson found Jay Jay McCullough for a 34-yard touchdown and Jadar Johnson returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown to push the advantage to 58-0 after three quarters. Adam Humphries scored from 2 yards out as the Tigers took a 7-0 lead, and Lakip kicked a 22-yard field goal later in the opening quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Scott set a school record for most receiving yards by a freshman, breaking the old mark of 155 shared by Sammy Watkins and Aaron Kelly. … Clemson redshirt freshman Wayne Gallman rushed for 77 yards on 10 carries. … The Tigers are off next week before heading to Tallahassee for their ACC opener against defending national champion and top-ranked Florida State.
