Ball State 40, Army 14: Keith Wenning threw for two touchdowns and Horactio Banks rushed for two more as the host Cardinals cruised past the Black Knights.
Wenning went 23-for-32 for 325 yards before giving way to backup Ozzie Mann early in the fourth quarter while Banks rushed for 51 yards. Scott Secor added four field goals for Ball State (2-0), which forced three turnovers and won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2008 – when it opened the season 12-0.
Larry Dixon rushed for two TDs and 107 yards for Army (1-1), which gained 363 of its 439 total yards on the ground. Dixon needed only 14 carries to post his second 100-yard game of the season and sixth of his career.
Dixon amassed most of those yards on his first carry of the game when he took a dive play up the middle on a third-down play for a career-long 71-yard TD run. Ball State evened it on the next drive with a 10-yard run by Banks and took the lead for good on the following possession on Wenning’s 8-yard scoring pass to Jamill Smith.
Secor added two field goals early in the second quarter and Banks scored for the second time with 1:01 left before the break. Secor stretched the margin to 30-7 with a 19-yard field goal with 10:46 left in the third quarter and Ball State recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, leading to Zane Fakes’ 11-yard TD catch 11 seconds later.
