Arizona 24, Toledo 17 (OT): Terrence Miller caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Matt Scott on third down in the first overtime to give coach Rich Rodriguez a victory in his debut with the Wildcats.
Scott scrambled away from pressure and found Miller, a senior who scored his first career touchdown, standing alone near the goal line. Toledo failed on its chance to tie.
Scott passed for 384 yards and ran for another 72 as Arizona outgained Toledo 623-347. Ka’Deem Carey registered 149 yards rushing, including a 73-yard jaunt that put the Wildcats up 17-14 early in the second half.
The Wildcats had a chance to win it as time expired in regulation, but John Bonano missed a 25-yard field goal.
Arizona fumbled twice, once inside the Toledo 10, and had a touchdown taken off the board because of a holding penalty in the first half. That all added up to a 14-10 deficit at halftime.
The Rockets converted 10-of-15 third-down opportunities in the first half and held the Wildcats to 1-of-4. Toledo quarterback Terrance Owens found Alonzo Russell down the right sideline for a 59-yard scoring play and a 7-3 lead 1:05 into the second quarter.
After Scott connected with Austin Hill on a 30-yard touchdown for Arizona, the Rockets drove 64 yards in 10 plays to take the lead on David Fluellen’s 1-yard run with 6:01 left in the first half.
