Utah State 27, Utah 20 (OT): Kerwynn Williams ran for the go-ahead score in overtime and Utah State’s defense held as the Aggies ended a 12-game losing streak to rival Utah in the 110th meeting of the “Battle of Brothers.”
Chuckie Keeton threw two touchdowns and set up the game-winning score with a 23-yard scamper for Utah State (2-0). The Aggies, coming off their first bowl appearance since 1997 – the same year they last beat Utah – proved they can finally hang with the Utes after losing the previous 12 meetings by an average of 24.1 points.
Utah (1-1) left Logan with a loss and perhaps a quarterback controversy. The offense was much more efficient after starter Jordan Wynn was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury late in the first half (X-rays were negative).
After Utah’s Coleman Petersen missed a 52-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation, Utah State was forced to start with the ball in overtime. On 3rd-and-8, Keeton, unable to find an open receiver, took off down the left sideline for 23 yards to the 1-yard line. One play later, Williams burst into the end zone untouched.
Utah backup quarterback Jon Hays hit Jake Murphy for an apparent 6-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession, but it was wiped out by an offensive pass interference call. Hays' toss into the end zone fell incomplete on fourth down and the Aggies’ faithful stormed the field in celebration.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Wynn was 6-of-11 for 47 yards before leaving. … The Utes managed just 58 yards over their first seven drives. ... Utah defensive lineman Joe Kruger was ejected in the fourth quarter for throwing a punch. … The Aggies had a blocked punt that went for a touchdown in the first quarter – the first time they accomplished the feat in 10 years. … Wynn had two shoulder surgeries in a 10-month span last season.
