Maine 24, Massachusetts 14: Zedric Joseph scored on a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and the visiting Black Bears held on for the victory over an FBS opponent.
Marcus Wasilewski hit Justin Perillo for 31 yards on third-and-17 and Joseph ran twice to punch it in for the Black Bears (2-0), who defeated Norfolk State last week. Rickey Stevens scampered for a 35-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give Maine its first lead at 10-7.
Wasilewski, who was 20-of-28 for 267 yards, converted his first rushing touchdown of the season at the 1:18 mark of the third, breaking through the pack for 39 yards and a 24-7 advantage. Stevens finished with 65 yards – one of three Black Bears to rush for between 65 and 80 yards.
UMass (0-2) opened the scoring 1:23 into the game when Mike Wegzyn hit Bernard Davis for a 7-yard score. A.J. Doyle later replaced Wegzyn and threw a fourth-quarter touchdown on fourth down to Tajae Sharpe, who notched career highs with 11 receptions and 85 yards.
Sean Decloux, who hit three field goals last week, converted a 26-yarder to give Maine its first points late in the first quarter. Freshman Stacey Bedell led UMass in rushing with 58 yards on 16 attempts.
