No. 4 Oregon 46, No. 6 Michigan State 27: Marcus Mariota passed for 318 yards and three touchdowns as the Ducks knocked off the visiting Spartans in a back-and-forth game.
Devon Allen caught three passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead the receiving corps for Oregon (2-0), which scored the game's final 28 points after falling behind by nine early in the second half. Royce Freeman opened up the rushing attack in the second half and finished with 89 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and Ifo Ekpre-Olomu secured a key interception with 7:56 left.
Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook completed 29-of-47 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted twice. Tony Lippett grabbed 11 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown and Jeremy Langford rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown for the Spartans (1-1), who suffered an early blow to their College Football Playoff hopes.
After the Spartans scored 20 straight points to take a 27-18 lead, Allen’s second touchdown reception - a 24-yarder - pulled Oregon within two and Keanon Lowe caught a 37-yard scoring strike from Mariota to give the Ducks a 32-27 lead. Freeman broke loose on a 38-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to move Oregon ahead by 12 and Ekpre-Olomu’s diving interception took the air out of Michigan State.
The Spartans scored the final 17 points of the first half after falling behind 18-7 and the first three points of the second half to move ahead by nine. Michigan State was 6-for-12 on third downs before the Ducks stopped the Spartans to end four straight drives and scored 21 unanswered points in the process.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Spartans did not allow a pass play of 60 yards or more last season but Oregon had two in the first half. … Oregon lost starting RT Andre Yruretagoyena to a leg injury early in the second half and he was replaced by freshman Tyrell Crosby. … Ekpre-Olomu has eight career interceptions, including six in the red zone.
