No. 21 South Carolina 33, East Carolina 23: Mike Davis rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns while Elliott Fry booted four field goals as the host Gamecocks gave coach Steve Spurrier his 200th win as an SEC coach and 50th home victory at South Carolina.
Dylan Thompson finished 25-of-38 for 266 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Gamecocks (1-1), who have won 19 of their last 20 at Williams-Brice Stadium. Shaq Roland has seven receptions for 94 yards and K.J. Brent hauled in a touchdown pass for South Carolina.
Shane Carden was 32-of-46 for 321 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Pirates (1-1) while Justin Hardy caught 11 passes for 133 yards and Cam Worthy grabbed a TD pass. Breon Allen ran for 58 yards and Chris Hairston added a 10-yard rushing touchdown that put East Carolina ahead 13-7 early in the second quarter.
A pair of field goals by Fry sandwiched around Davis' second TD run of the evening gave South Carolina a 20-13 lead before Warren Harvey's 40-yard field goal pulled East Carolina within four at the half. The Gamecocks' defense came to life in the third quarter, as Sharrod Golightly's interception set up Thompson's 16-yard TD strike to Brent that made it 27-16 and T.J. Gurley's pick on the next series led to Fry's 26-yard field goal.
East Carolina pulled within 30-23 when Carden capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Worthy with 12:03 left, but the Gamecocks answered with an 18-play drive that chewed 10:33 off the clock. Fry capped the marathon possession with a 20-yard field goal to seal it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: DT Gerald Dixon Jr.'s blocked field goal in the second quarter was the first for South Carolina since Stephon Gilmore accomplished the feat against Tennessee in 2011. … The Gamecocks have won 16 consecutive non-conference games overall and 21 straight in the regular season. … Hardy went over 100 yards receiving for the 10th time in his career.
