Utah State 52, Air Force 20: Chuckie Keeton passed for 360 yards and five touchdowns as the Aggies made their Mountain West Conference debut a memorable one with a rout of the host Falcons.
Utah State (1-1, 1-0) outgained
the Air Force, 577-270, including a 252-yard edge through the air. Ten
different Aggies caught passes, led by Travis Van Leeuwen, who had
six receptions for 70 yards and a score.
The Falcons (1-1, 0-1) tried
three different quarterbacks against the Aggies' defense, with none
having much success. Air Force finished 6-of-18 through the air for
108 yards.
The game was somewhat close
throughout the first half, even after Utah State jumped out to a 14-0
first-quarter lead on Keeton's 30-yard touchdown strike to Van
Leeuwen and Joe Hill's 1-yard run. A pair of field goals and Jaleel
Awini's 3-yard touchdown run pulled the Falcons within 21-13 in the
second, and Air Force trailed by just 11 at halftime.
But the second half belonged to
the Aggies, with Keeton throwing three touchdowns in the third
quarter to open up a 45-13 advantage. Keeton connected with Keegan
Andersen from 1 yard out early in the fourth to put the game away.
