Kansas 34, Southeast Missouri State 28: Montell Cozart threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Jayhawks to a win in their season opener.
De'Andre Mann rushed 15 times for 121 yards for Kansas (1-0), which also got 91 yards and a touchdown on the ground from Corey Avery. Tony Pierson had four catches for 95 yards and a score and Nick Harwell added four more for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
Paul McRoberts had six receptions for 173 yards and two touchdowns for Southeast Missouri State (1-1). Kyle Snyder was 12-of-27 for 269 yards and three scores for the Redhawks but also threw three interceptions.
Kansas broke out quickly, putting up 24 points in the opening quarter. After a Matthew Wyman 43-yard field goal, Avery had a 10-yard scoring scamper followed by 6- and 10-yard TD receptions by Harwell from Cozart.
Southeast Missouri State finally got on the board on a DeMichael Jackson 7-yard run in the third quarter, but Cozart connected with Pierson on a 67-yard bomb to make it 31-7 and Wyman added another field goal for a 27-point advantage heading to the fourth. Snyder threw three scoring tosses in the fourth quarter to make it close, but the Redhawks were never within single digits until the final two minutes.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Jayhawks were helped by a 3-0 advantage in turnovers. … After racking up a school-record 516 yards in total offense in its opener, Southeast Missouri State had 421 yards against the Jayhawks. … Kansas is 3-0 in season openers under Charlie Weis but is 2-20 in all other games under the third-year coach.
